A ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex Daytona watch sold for $212,500 including the buyer’s premium at the Fortuna Auction House yesterday.
The circa 1968, 36mm stainless steel chronograph has a cream dial and includes applied square and luminous indexes, a black outer track and red calibrations.
Estimated to go for between $150,000 and $250,000, this watch did not quite live up to the records set by its predecessor; a watch the late film star wore every day for 15 consecutive years fetched a record breaking $15.5m at Phillips, New York, in October.
The Rolex was the top lot of over 100 watches going under the hammer yesterday and was not the only one that sold for a hefty fee.
A couple of notable lots costing large sums were a Patek Phillipe 18k Rose Gold Annual Calendar and Rolex Daytona in steel which went for $30,000 and $32,500 respectively.
