Sustainable Swatch dive watch rises from the deep

Scubaqua uses the same environmentally-friendly materials as the MoonSwatch.

Swatch is making a long-awaited return to the dive watch genre with a series of brightly-colored Scubaqua tickers.

A scroll through the Swatch archive reveals precious-few options for underwater enthusiasts save for the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms tribute act that tried to replicate the success of the Omega-linked MoonSwatch.

Both the Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms and the Omega x Swatch Moonswatch are made from bioceramic, a lightweight blend of ceramic and caster oil-based materials.

Scubaquas use the same composite for the solid parts of their 44mm cases, while a new biosourced material, also derived from castor oil, is used in transparent parts of the case, 60-minute countdown bezel and strap.

They come together to create an effect that Swatch likens to the translucent aura of a jellyfish.

Mechanics of their quartz movements can be seen through semi-transparent dials, or fully transparent in the case of a clear version of the watch named Aurelia Aurita, Latin for the Moon Jelly family of jellyfish.

There are four other models in the launch collection Lion’s Mane (red), Black Sea Nettle (black), Egg Yolk (yellow) and blue fire (pale blue).

The Scubaqua watches are water resistant to 100 meters.

Price is £150.
