Cartier Privé has updated its historic Tank à Guichets watch collection that was first seen in the Roaring Twenties.
A portent of the digital watch age, the watches displayed the time with jumping hours and dragging minutes showing through small windows (guichets) in solid gold closed-dial cases.
The style was an answer to an increasingly mobile, and upwardly-mobile population that wanted watches that could be read at a glance.
Collectors now seek out different version of the Tank à Guichets that were introduced by Cartier throughout the 1930s, and more recent limited editions to mark milestones like a platinum piece for the 150th anniversary of Cartier in 1997.
For 2025, Cartier Privé is re-introducing the icon in two designs from the archive.
First is a modern representation of the original 1928 design with the hour displayed at 12 o’clock and the minutes in a smiling arc at 6 o’clock.
The configuration can be ordered in yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum.
Both gold watches are priced at $47,700 while the platinum edition is $55,500.
Second is a 200-piece limited edition, offered only in platinum, that turns the time display on its side so that hours are shown vertically to the top-left of the face and minutes are at 45-degrees in the opposite corner.
It is sold on a black leather strap for $61,000.
The collection uses Cartier’s hand wound 9755 MC movement in non-water-resistant cases measuring 37.6mm x 24.8mm x 6mm.
