Louis Vuitton brings back 1980s Monterey travel watches

Louis Vuitton's original travel timer is being revived as a luxury modern accessory.

Eagle-eyed fashionistas at Paris Fashion Week will need to have brushed-up on their horological history at the Louis Vuitton Autumn-Winter catwalk show as a late eighties travel watch from the brand was used to accessorise its high fashion show.

The LV II, which will launch later this year, is based on the 1988 Monterey watch.

Monterey was designed by Italian Gae Aulenti, who was best-known as an architect and furniture stylist, but was recruited by Louis Vuitton to work on a watch that spoke to the maison’s history in luxury travel goods.

The Monterey was a quartz-based watch with an alarm function as well as date and moon phase, in an 18ct gold case.

Original LV Monterey II watches from 1988 are selling for around $10,000 on the secondary market today.

She followed up with the 37mm Monterey II, which provides the design language for the 2025 LV II.

Louis Vuitton has not shared technical details for the LV II, but its design suggests it will have the same functionality as the Monterey II, which eschewed the moonphase but retailed its time, date and alarm functions.

At Paris Fashion Week, Louis Vuitton models wore the LV II on their wrists and as a pendant around their necks.

“The watch embodies the spirit of travel dear to the Maison,” Louis Vuitton says.
