G-Shock’s has launched a past-meets-future model that it is calling Origin Revival.
It has the looks (and of course toughness) of Casio’s original DW 5000 G-Shock.
In the Revival model that is finished off with a bezel and band made from a modern, eco-friendly, bio-based resin.
This is, according to G-Shock, “proof that you can honour the past and protect the future”.
It has the G-Shock’s shock-resistant structure and 200m water-resistance – up from the 100m of the first watches.
It also has the expected features of countdown timer and stopwatch, multiple alarms, LED light and 12/24 format clock.
The first G-Shock was launched in 1983.
A Casio engineer had undertaken the project to make a watch that could conform to the ‘triple 10’ concept: have a 10 year battery life; survive a drop of 10 metres, be water-resistant to 10 bar (c. 100 metres).
Since then it has surpassed these utilitarian beginnings.
It is still chosen as a no-nonsense tough watch, often the timepiece of choice for military personnel before they retire and buy something mechanical.
But the G-Shock has also become a canvas for designs of many shapes and colors, some in fancy metals and costing as much as fancy-named watches.
This watch is firmly at the accessible end of the range.
The Casio G-Shock DW5000R-1A Origin Revival costs $200.
