The original 1980s G-Shock was created with one thing in mind: toughness.
Casio has since expanded the range far beyond its original remit.
So there have been G-Shocks of all sizes and colors, from the plain and accessibly priced, to the fancy and expensive.
One of the ultimate expressions is the newly unveiled MT-G that is inspired by storm chasers.
The new watch, codenamed MTGB2000YST1, has an ion-plated rainbow bezel, a multi-layered carbon frame, and a mixed-color molded resin band.
This mix of colours is intended, Casio says, to evoke the “look of the sky as the storm approaches”.
This design is inspired by the “intrepid researchers who head straight into harsh weather conditions like tornadoes to collect vital meteorological data”.
The bezel frame is produced by laminating multiple carbon and glass fiber sheets, a multi-layered design that expresses the look of skies with “dark, stormy clouds approaching”.
For all the fancy colors, this is still a G-Shock, and the monocoque case of carbon fiber-reinforced resin inside a metal frame connected to the bezel, gives the expected levels of toughness.
The solar-powered, Bluetooth-enabled watch is water-resistant to 200m.
The G-SHOCK MTGB2000YST1 costs $1,450.
