We may be annoyed that Swatch chose not to host an event in the United States for its latest MoonSwatch, but there is always the opportunity to pay a fortune for one of the watches on the secondary market.
The first Moonshine Gold Moonswatches, launched at events in Japan, Italy, Switzerland and Britain yesterday, have been flipped on eBay for around £1,000 ($1,200), four times there £250 ($300) retail price.
WatchPro was at the London event, which attracted a crowd we would estimate at around 300-400, who formed orderly queues around the historic Royal Exchange, next door to the Bank of England in the City of London.
Speaking to people in the crowd, it was clear many of them were there for the potential profits of scoring one of the new MoonSwatches, but there were also genuine fans wanting to complete a collection, or simply get the newest model.
The watches began appearing online last night with outrageous prices of £2,500 ($3,000) — or best offer —, but filtering on eBay for pieces that had sold brought the list down to a handful that had gone for around £1,000 ($1,200).
Last year’s collection of MoonSwatch’s have been coming down in price on the secondary market since the early days of mania.
Depending on the model, sold prices on eBay are currently around $300 to $400.
