Atowak learns from manta rays for latest radical watch design

Awe-inspiring fish's power and serenity are capture in the new MANTA-X.

Atowak’s radical reshaping of the affordable watch design landscape is continuing with the unveiling of its MANTA-X, which incorporates three world-first mechanical breakthroughs

Its architecture and aesthetic, the Hong Hong-based company says, is infused with inspiration drawn from “biomimicry concepts”.

I’ve asked AI what that means, so you don’t have to.

“Biomimicry is a design philosophy that learns from and emulates nature’s patterns and strategies to solve human problems. It involves studying the natural world to find innovative solutions for challenges in various fields like engineering, architecture, and even business,” we learn.

In this instance, the MANTA-X is inspired by a manta ray’s elegance and the mysteries of the ocean.

“This timepiece is more than just a watch — it’s an immersive experience,” Atowak descibes.

“Its biomimetic case design echoes the graceful contours of the manta ray’s motion, while the dynamic movement of the hands reflects the ocean’s ebb and flow. Crafted to evoke both power and serenity, this creation encapsulates Atowak’s philosophy of blending marine charm with cutting-edge watchmaking,” it adds.

The watch comes in a bold and angular octagonal titanium case measuring 49.5mm × 42mm and standing 13mm tall at its highest point.

MANTA-X is powered by a modified Swiss Sellita SW200 movement with Atowak’s proprietary hour wheel module that drives its 180° Hexa-Prism 3D Wandering Hour System.

The watch tells the time with hours on two slowly rotating six-faced rotating hour wheels said to look like the graceful wingbeats of a manta ray and 13 wheels that flip from right to left to show minutes in a semicircle around the bottom of the central hours display.

This unique mechanism completes a 60° rotation every hour.

It is available in a choice of blue or purple colourways and can be pre-ordered from this week for $3,800.

Shipping is expected to begin for limited quantities from July.
