The GMT-Master might have launched a thousand pet names, but Seiko’s brace of new diving watches now officially ‘own’ the ‘Pepsi’ denotion. What’s more, they come in their own can.
Rolex had better move fast if it doesn’t want another fine watch brand forging its own partnership with Coca-Cola and robbing the 1982 red-and-black bezelled GMT-Master of its own nickname…
Two new limited-edition diving watches, in the Japanese watchmaker’s amazingly affordable 5 Sport line, are an exclusive collaboration with the beverage giant.
One comes in Pepsi’s modern branding and – fittingly, or cheekily, you decide – in precisely the same configuration as Rolex’s ground-breaker of the Fifties, complete with GMT and rotating 24-hour bezel for a third time-zone on the fly (SKX GMT, ref SSK047, around $630).
A Japanese-made 4R34 automatic ticks inside the PVD-black 42mm steel case, which for the pricetag means you’re getting a huge ‘POP!’ for your buck.
The other – SRPL99, nomenclature never being Seiko’s strongest point; around $430 – will have retro Seiko collectors champing at the bit (not to mention fans of Americana) since it comes in all-Nineties branding, and revives a Seiko diver from the era.
A 4R36 time-only movement is under the bright-white dial, and the case is period-correct 38mm. Unidirectional bezel, and unidirectional direction for any Seikohead or sugar addict: to the online shop, before they’re guzzled up.
