Gübelin works with starchitect Santiago Calatrava to create Ipsomatic watches

Swiss retailer works with the architect for the Oculus station at Ground Zero in New York on platinum watch.

Swiss luxury jeweler Gübelin has produced a handsome limited edition watch designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava.

Calatrava has designed buildings all over the world, and is perhaps best known for the visually arresting Oculus station at Ground Zero in New York.

He also designed the waterfront City of Arts and Sciences complex in his home city, Valencia.

The platinum cased Gübelin Ipsomatic is his first watch.

It is named Ipsomatic after a historic model that Gübelin made in the mid 20th century.

It is limited to 170 pieces, the number of years since Gübelin was founded in Lucerne.

The watch is powered by a historical automatic movement from the Swiss calibre specialist Felsa.

It also comes with an innovative proof of authenticity, combining physical tracers with digital blockchain technology, so watches are invisibly marked and documented in a tamper-proof way.

Calatrava said: “Working with a company that has such a long tradition and has been led by the same family for many generations was both a pleasure and a challenge for me: to find a proposition which states the high quality of Gübelin over time. I was inspired by the idea of time. Time exists because there is change, change means movement, the eternal essence of time is the dynamic component of its shape.”

Raphael Gübelin, President of Gübelin, added: “The launch of our own watch with its iconic shape, designed by Santiago Calatrava, marks another milestone for our company. With its contemporary design, historical Felsa movement and proof of authenticity, Ipsomatic unites history, present and future.”

The Gübelin Ipsomatic costs CHF 34,900.
