Back in 2021, Ciga Design was the deserving winner of the GHPG Challenge Watch prize for its original Blue Planet timepiece.
The dramatic watch, which has since won a clutch of additional design awards, was created during the darkest days of the covid pandemic, which led the China-based business to make a timepiece that encourages the human race to treat the planet with greater care.
Ciga Design has since updated the watch to the Blue Planet II, which has the same hand-free way of telling the time.
Inspired by ancient sundials, the watch replaces traditional watch hands with a continuously rotating dial that simulates the Earth’s movement.
Connection to the earth is further enhanced by a domed crystal glass over the globe, which merges seamlessly with a flat pebble-shaped titanium case.
The 2025 edition has a 25% increase in crystal curvature and 36% enhancement to the Earth’s curvature.
“Crafted with eco-friendly materials, the Blue Planet II symbolises global unity and our shared responsibility to preserve the planet,” the company says.
Despite its Chinese origins, the Blue Planet watch has since been inducted into the entered the permanent collection of the Geneva Museum of Art and History.
The new model’s Japanese-made automatic movement, protected in a recycled titanium or steel case, has been crafted with a special rotor commemorating the 2021 victory at the GPHG Awards.
It is retailing now for $1,199 in steel or $1,399 in titanium.
