ID Genève has unveiled a new limited-edition watch with a strap made from grape residue from the production of fine French wines.
It is the latest environmentally conscious move from ID Genève, the Swiss newcomer that puts an emphasis on recycling and refurbishing.
As well as refurbished movements and recycled steel, we have seen a number of innovations on display from the brand already, including packaging grown from mushrooms.
The new watch has a garnet dial and a strap made from a new sustainable material called Nisiar.
It is made from different wines to produce sustainable materials to rival animal leather.
The Nisiar brand – raisin in reverse, French for grape – was launched on an industrial level this year by French sustainable materials company Mondin.
Different grapes produce different colors and textures.
The variety used for the new ID Genève watch has a natural brown derived from the tannins of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
The ID Genève Circular 1 – Garnet has a 41mm recycled steel case and a refurbished old-stock ETA automatic movement.
There is a sunray-finish red garnet dial and recycled, luminescent hands.
“Nisiar was born out of our desire to rethink how we use natural resources,” said Rodolphe Mondin, co-founder of Nisiar. “We are thrilled to present a material that combines aesthetics, performance, and eco-responsibility.”
Cédric Mulhauser, co-founder of ID Genève, added: “With Nisiar, we have not only found a material of exceptional quality but also an extremely precise traceability that allows us to trace the exact journey of the grape. This transparency is the luxury of tomorrow.”
ID Genève was founded in 2020 and emphasises circular materials and a low carbon footprint.
The ID Genève Circular 1 – Garnet is a limited edition of 40 watches.
