1965 Cartier Baignoire fetches over £10k at Fellows’ latest auction

The timepiece was originally introduced in 1965, and has become a rare commodity in recent years

A rare Cartier Baignoire watch was sold at Fellows’ most recent auction for £10,465.

Auctioned as Lot 44, the rare model features an 18ct yellow gold case, hallmarked in London.

The watch is powered by a manual wind movement signed by Jaeger-LeCoultre and features a pristine white dial with classic Roman numeral hour markers.

Cartier Baignoire has long been known for its ubique elliptical shape, a standout from the round face watches that dominated the market upon its introduction in 1912.

The name “Baignoire”, which translates to “bathtub” in French, has become synonymous in describing the timepiece’s unique shape.

The watch’s London hallmark is indicative of its exclusive retail history at Cartier’s prestigious Bond Street boutique, a period in which Cartier limited annual production to roughly 1,000 pieces worldwide.

Steven Yambo, watch specialist at Fellows, said: “It was amazing to have such a rare watch in auction be so highly sought-after. With a total of 37 bids, this was a great auction to witness.”

Fellows’ next watches auction will take place on Thursday 3 October.
