New blue: Rado Captain Cook and True Square

Rado has unveiled new versions of two of its best-known watches, the Captain Cook, and the True Square Skeleton.

The Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Skeleton comes with a new matt deep-navy PVD case colour.

For the first time, the case back is finished in matching deep blue. The teeth of the are polished to a shine to complement the box-shaped sapphire crystal.

There is also a sapphire crystal caseback for full viewing of the R808 movement, the anti-magnetic, shock-resistant automatic calibre with Nivachron-hairspring that has a 80-hour power reserve.

The 43mm hi-tech ceramic case is water-resistant to a hefty 300m and the blue rubber strap has an extendable folding clasp.

The second watch continues the deep-blue theme. The True Square Skeleton has a 38mm square case in blue polished ceramic.

It has the same 25-jewel R808 automatic movement which is fully admirable from both sides. For the first time, the True Square is fitted with a rubber strap. And while it also has an extendable folding clasp, the True Square is inherently a much less sporty piece than the Captain Cook, hence a correspondingly less hefty water-resistance of 50m.

A lot of watch companies offer ceramic models now, but Rado can rightly claim to be at the forefront. Calling itself the Master of Materials, Rado has a long history of experimenting with less usual materials to make its watches.

Rado’s use of ceramic goes back to the 1980s and the brand has pioneered its own lightweight, scratch-resistant materials that have been part of transforming the way watch companies go about their business.

Rado Captain Cook High-Tech Ceramic Skeleton: £4100

Rado True Square Automatic Skeleton: £2350
