Sotheby’s is set to host a landmark auction this November, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the legendary watchmaking house Breguet.
This exclusive sale, the largest of its kind in over three decades, will showcase some of the finest timepieces created by Abraham-Louis Breguet, known as the ‘Father of Modern Watchmaking,’ whose groundbreaking innovations continue to shape horology today.
Curated in partnership with Montres Breguet SA and Mr. Emmanuel Breguet, a descendant of the brand’s founder, the auction will highlight Breguet’s legacy with a lineup of pocket watches, wristwatches, and clocks on offer, each representing a key moment in its illustrious history.
The sale is part of Sotheby’s Luxury Sales in Geneva, running alongside the flagship Important Watches live auction.
Mr Breguet’s timepieces are renowned for their intricate design and technical prowess, including his iconic tourbillon and automatic winding mechanisms.
His clientele included some of Europe’s most influential royals and elite figures, from Queen Marie-Antoinette to Napoleon Bonaparte, with each watch taking months or even years to create.
The auction will feature rare pieces such as the 1827 Perpétuelle à Tact watch which was made for King George IV, alongside an open-faced Breguet Montre à Tact with moonphases and calendar functions.
“Abraham-Louis Breguet profoundly influenced horological history,” says Daryn Schnipper, Chairman Emeritus of Sotheby’s Watches. “This auction is a fitting tribute to his remarkable legacy.” Breguet’s CEO, Gregory Kissling, added, “This is not just a sale, but a celebration of Breguet’s timeless innovation and elegance.”
More details about the auction are set to be revealed later in the spring.
