WOTY 2014: Zenith Academy Hurricane

Highly Commended. Mechanical Watches of the Year 2014.

The latest iteration of Zenith’s Christophe Colomb collection of high-end watchmaking uses a constant force ‘fusee and chain’ complication to transmit power to the 36,000vph El Primero escapement, which itself is mounted to Zenith’s gyroscopically stabilised Gravity Control platform.

In theory this consistent delivery of power across the watch’s 50-hour power reserve coupled with its gravity-cancelling escapement should make for incredible levels of accuracy. Supremely complicated, the 18cm chain alone contains 585 components, and sublimely finished, the Hurricane is a visual delight.

With open-worked dial exposing the fusee chain, as it wraps itself around the mainspring barrel, and the Gravity Control escapement spinning with gay abandon, the Hurricane is pure horological theatre.
