WOTY 2014: Vivienne Westwood Westminster

Highly Commended. Fashion Watches of the Year 2014.

Bold design is at the heart of this metallic chronograph, which makes great use of bimetal construction.

The gold tones are used sparingly on a steel base, serving to highlight important features rather than for flashy effect. We at WatchPro are rarely fans of bezels embossed with brand names – it’s normally unnecessarily ostentatious – but on this occasion it just works, suiting the chunky, muted-masculinity of the watch.

It’s difficult to know where to start when discussing the design as there is so much to talk about. Would you talk about the symmetrical steel bracelet, the rose gold crown and chrono pushers, the etched motif dial or the contrasting blue central seconds hand first? It’s a tribute to the watch designer’s deft touch that such powerful elements combine to form a coherent whole.
