Watches from the Queen’s goldsmith go under the hammer at Fellows

Watches owned by Stuart Devlin, a goldsmith and silversmith who once help a royal warrant to supply gold and jewels to the Queen, are set to go up for auction at Fellows.

Held in Birmingham in the UK but accessible online, a diamond watch by Jaeger LeCoultre and a gentleman’s 18ct white gold watch by Ebel will be available from Devlin’s collection.

Devlin (pictured above with his wife), once described by Prince Philip as “probably the most original and creative goldsmith of his time, and one of the greats of all time,” was given watches by brands who wanted him to promote their items.

Jeager-Lecoultre, Lot 157.

Entered to sale by his family, the Jaeger LeCoultre, which will feature in the Antique and Modern Jewellery sale on January 24 with an estimate of between $2,599 (£2,000) and $3,200 (£2,500), was a personal favourite of Devlin’s and a piece he wore regularly as a dress watch.

Ebel, Lot 79.

The Ebel will go under the hammer later in the month as part of the Fellows’ watch sale on January 29. It has an estimate of between $1,919 (£1,500) and $2,599 (£2,000).

Laura Bishop, watch manager at Fellows Auctioneers, said: “We are delighted to be able to begin the New Year on a high with watches that belonged to such a famous jewellery designer and silversmith. Devlin’s work is incredibly influential and a part of our country’s design history.”

She added: “The watches from his estate are very appealing, both in terms of their provenance and style. It is amazing to think that these watches were worn by one of this country’s greatest designers on a regular basis. I’m sure their history will mean that they gain a lot of interest. Whoever buys these pieces is acquiring a piece of history.”

The cataloguing for the watches can be viewed below and both sales can be viewed via our website.
