Rolex joins James Cameron on Deep Sea Challenge

0

When film director and adventurer James Cameron travelled seven miles down to the bottom of the Mariana Trench this week, he entrusted his timekeeping to a specially created Rolex divers’ watch.

Rolex, which co-sponsored the historic submarine trip, created an experimental Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge timepiece that was seen worn on the wrist of James Cameron, and on a robotic arm outside the submarine.

The current expedition is only the second time that a submarine has descended to the bottom of the Mariana Trench. The previous dive in 1960 also took a Rolex Deep Sea Special wristwatch on the trip where it successfully kept time at a depth of 35,814 feet.

The latest Deepsea Challenge wristwatch was designed and built by Rolex to withstand the extreme pressures at the Pacific Ocean’s deepest point. It is certified waterproof at up to 39,000 feet, according to Rolex.
