With a founder, Abraham-Louis Perrelet, who was the inventor of the world’s first self-winding watch 250 years ago, Perrelet has an abundance of heritage and credibility to go with its modern innovative designs. The brand’s current general manager, Tristan Boyer de Bouillane, speaks to WatchPro about the opportunities and challenges that it faces in the American market.
WatchPro: How significant is the USA as a market to Perrelet?
Tristan Boyer de Bouillane: The USA market is an important market for Perrelet. We have been here for a long time and from the beginning the brand was very well received. The American public loves watches with a unique and original design, like our Turbine models, which, when the blades rotates at full speed, create spectacular optical effects.
WP: What is it about Perrelet that should make certain US watch retailers want to stock the brand?
TBdB: Perrelet is really a different brand with a strong identity and unique codes. All our watches are equipped with in-house automatic movements, in tribute to Abraham-Louis Perrelet and his invention in 1777. In the 21st century Perrelet is the inventor of the first “double rotor” automatic caliber, based on a unique and patented construction unveiled in 1995 and of the Turbine Technology (developed in 2009). All these technologies allow Perrelet to create watches with animated dials.
Thanks to these distinctive features Perrelet is able to satisfy the expectations of the most discerning connoisseurs wishing for singularity.
WP: How many stockists do you currently have in the States?
TBdB: We have currently 15 POS in the USA.
WP: Do you also sell directly to the end consumer via ecommerce in the USA? If so, how do you balance this with your wholesale operation?
TBdB: No, we do not sell directly to the end consumer via e-commerce. Perrelet’s timepieces need to be explained in details so that people can understand the real values of our products which are the result of research and developments in our manufacture. We believe that professional and qualified points of sale are the best sale’s channel to promote the brand.
WP: What is the big news (including new launches) from Perrelet this year?
TBdB: On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the development of the Turbine Technology, Perrelet launched the new Turbine Evo at the end of May. To commemorate this important landmark the Turbine Evo has a completely overhauled design and a new in-house movement. New style for the 44mm case, which has a smoother and flat bezel, a prominent crown making winding and setting functions much simpler (in the past the crown was recessed in the case band), and, for the first time, a comfortable metal bracelet.
Last but not least, for the first time the in-house automatic movement, caliber P-331-MH, which is assembled from the case back (a feature that makes any future assistance much simpler and faster) is COSC certified.
For watch-lovers in search of elegant and refined timepieces, Perrelet presents the new Weekend GMT, which is also the ideal watch for globetrotters, displaying the GMT function on 24-hour. Its 39mm case with a thickness of on 9.56mm makes it a classic casual or smart model, for daily use as well as for special occasions.
But Perrelet is a company in continuous evolution and we are working on interesting novelties, expressing our DNA, which will come soon!
