Nomos brings Bauhaus serenity to its range of sports watches

The serene Bauhaus movement is not typically linked to the rough and tumble of sport; preferring to meditate on a more minimalist plain of clean lines and pure form matched to function. It was a departure, therefore, to see NOMOS Glashutte, a watchmaker synonymous with the clarity of Bauhaus, to focus on sports watches for its 2019 presentations at Baselworld.

These are not, however, your typical sports watches with bulky bezels, chunky steel bracelets and macho proportions. NOMOS instead appears to have learned from the modern ‘athleisure’ watches made by the likes of Apple to make models that maintain their simplicity of design, but add enhanced water resistance and make them more resilient to knocks.

The results are seen across Nomos families including brand-new sports watches with bracelets including the Tangente Sport and Club Sport, which both have house the neomatik date caliber DUW 6101 in 42mm cases.

Their generous proportions make them easily legible, while their water resistance to 1000 ft (30 atm) is evidence that they are considerably more robust than previous collections. What’s more, they are the first NOMOS watches to be designed with tailor-made bracelets that are true adherents to the Bauhaus mantra that form follows function.

The bracelets are made from slender, solid stainless steel links. The wearer can easily attach the bracelet, or adjust it to suit their wrist using a screwdriver to remove links as necessary. Further adjustments can be made using the spring bars (to loosen the watch slightly in summer, for example).

The deployment clasp was also designed and developed exclusively for NOMOS Glashütte; its easy-to-use catch is the finishing touch on this attractive bracelet. It is also extremely comfortable to wear. “It will feel like it’s always been a part of your arm,“ NOMOS says.

The Tagente Sport and Club Sport have extra-robust cases, reinforced seals and sapphire crystal glass to protect them against knocks, blows, and leaks. NOIMOS says they are designed as miniature vaults that can only be cracked by experts.

The DUW 6101 is a nice slim movement, which means the sports watches are not heavy and bulky like those from other brands.

Tangente Sport is available in two versions—with a white silver-plated dial and in marine black—while Club Sport comes with a dial in deep black. They both started selling in May.
