Laurent Ferrier brings Art Deco styling to Square Micro-Rotor Retro timepieces

Laurent Ferrier has given a classic Art Deco look to a fresh pair of Square Micro-Rotor Retro timepieces.

The watches demonstrate Mr Ferrier’s passion to make watches much more than mere tools for telling the time but a real multi-sensory experience.

Retro refers in this instance to the 1930s aesthetic of the two-model collection and the Art Deco movement’s influence on geometric rigor, minimalism and graphic styling.

Unusually, Laurent Ferrier is adopting Arabic numerals (just the hours 3, 9 and 12) for the new watches, which give the dial a more casual feel.

They are combined on the face with a segmented Art Deco-style hours track and small seconds at 6 o’clock.

There is a steel model with a bright silvery white dial and a piece in 18ct rose gold with a charcoal grey opaline dial. Hands are made from painted or rhodium plated 18ct white gold.

Laurent Ferrier has used the square case before in previous Micro-Rotor watches.

This time the 41 x 41mm case houses the atelier’s favoured hand wound FBN 229.01 calibre, which is presented through a crystal sapphire case back so you can see the unidirectional micro-rotor and silicon escapement featuring a double direct impulse.

Laurent Ferrrier developed the double direct impulse on the balance to maximize energy efficiency.

Two escape wheels and an appropriately shaped lever impel the balance twice per oscillation. This improves the efficiency, helping the watch run for a full three days between windings.

The watches are water resistance-rated at 30 metres and worn on alligator leather straps.

The stainless steel Square Micro-Rotor Retro is priced at CHF 45,000 (excluding tax) and the rose gold version is CHF 55,000.

Laurent Ferrier is accepting orders now with a delivery time of 6 months.
