IN PICS: Bidders lap up Bonhams Nobleman collection sale


The second installment of Bonhams’ sale of the collection of a European nobleman proved a huge draw to watch buyers, selling every lot.

Bonhams February sale in Knightsbridge saw bidders successfully buy more than 250 lots, of which 100 were from the collection of .

Further pieces from the collection, a large part of which was generated through an obsession with locating an Alpina wristwatch lost by his father, will be offered by Bonhams at sales throughout the year.

Jonathan Darracott, Bonhams global head of watches, said: “We have achieved excellent results for the first watch sale of the year, with multiple lots soaring to several times the estimate, and 100% of this exciting Collection of a European Nobleman sold.

“The collection has been brilliantly received by watch enthusiasts around the world, all eager to acquire a piece from the largest single-owner watch collection in Europe, and possibly the world.”

Sale highlights include a Glashütte Original, 18ct rose gold manual wind triple calendar wristwatch, sold for double the top estimate at £6,000, and a titanium and rose gold Omega chronograph, sold for £5,875, almost three times the estimate.

Further highlights include a Piaget Carree, 18ct rose gold automatic wristwatch with power reserve, sold for £3,750; an Omega 18ct rose gold automatic triple calendar wristwatch with moonphase, sold for £4,250, and a Vacheron Constantin 18ct gold manual wind wristwatch, sold for £3,750.

Containing more than 2,000 watches, the Collection of a European Nobleman is believed to be the largest ever seen in Europe.
