Hublot caught the watch world’s attention with the unveiling of its MP05 LaFerrari Sapphire project in 2015, which housed its engine-inspired movement inside an oversized all sapphire case.
The project was really about demonstrating the company’s ability to work with sapphire, a skill that is now put to work in the creation of 500 Big Bang Unico Sapphire models cut straight from the gemstone.
Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot, says it is a technical and creative marvel. “A transparent case that reveals the soul of the watch—the Unico movement – and an absolute transparency extending to the strap. The Big Bang is laying itself bare. It has nothing to hide and everything to show,” he says.
The greatest achievement is managing to ramp up production of the all-sapphire 45mm cases to 500 units, the first time that sapphire has been cut on such a large scale.
The cases house a HUB 1242 UNICO Automatic flyback chronograph with column wheel and double clutch visible on the dial side.
