HEARST PICK: Mechanical Watches of the Year, Breitling Avenger Hurricane

Heads-up displays may have replaced much of the information fighter pilots used to use their Breitlings for, but that doesn’t stop aficionados appreciating the connection between the brand and its heritage.

Nor does it deter Breitling from designing timepieces with supersonic combat in mind.

The latest Hurricane, priced today at £6810, illustrates the point with its ultra-sturdy and ultra-light 50mm case made in a trademarked alloy named Breitlight.

The new chronograph pushes the boundaries in terms of instruments for professionals, with sturdy construction equipped with lateral protective reinforcements and an all-black look enhanced by yellow accents and aviation-inspired stencil-type numerals, the company says.

The new COSC-certified Breitling Caliber B12 self-winding chronograph works behind a black dial with 24-hour clock markers surrounded by a black bezel.

Breitlight is perhaps the biggest leap forward because it has allowed the creation of a case that is 3.3 times lighter than it would be if made from titanium and 5.8 times lighter than steel, without compromising on strength and durability.
