Grand Seiko marks 160th anniversary of Seiko’s founder’s birth with precious limited editions

A lot has been written this year about the 60th anniversary of Grand Seiko, but 2020 is also the 160th anniversary of the birth of Seiko founder Kintaro Hattori, who established the company in 1881 when he was just 21.

To mark the anniversary of Mr Hattori’s birth and 140 years since Seiko was created, Grand Seiko’s Micro Artist Studio has designed two limited editions that will go on sale early next year.

Both watches are said to exemplify Mr Hattori’s dedication to the mastery of every aspect of the watchmaker’s art.

Grand Seiko has added the Kintaro Hattori 160th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGZ005 to its Masterpiece Collection using the hand-wound Spring Drive Caliber 9R02 with an 84 hour power reserve and accuracy of ± 1 second per day.

The SBGZ005 Masterpiece is a limited edition of 50 available exclusively at the Grand Seiko Boutiques for $103,000 USD.

Grand Seiko’s Micro Artist Studio chose to recreate the brand’s first rose gold watch for its Seiko 140th Anniversary Limited Edition SBGW260.

It uses the hand-wound Caliber 9S64, which is accurate to +5 to -3 seconds per day and has 72 hours of power reserve, housed in a 38mm 18ct rose gold case.

The SBGW260 is a limited edition of 350 available exclusively at the Grand Seiko Boutiques for $29,000 USD.
