Wine connoisseurs know their watches, it seems, as a one-off watch made by De Bethune for sale at auction alongside cases of Burgundy’s finest vintages smashed its estimate.
The one of one DB27 La Romanée 1865 by De Bethune watch with a striking burgundy dial and strap, sold for CHF 97,600, roughly double its pre-sale estimate of CHF 40,000 to 60,000.
De Bethune made the watch for Baghera/wines’ La Romanée Memories auction, which took place in Geneva on April 18.
DB27 La Romanée 1865 by De Bethune is a unique timepiece whose burgundy dial has a map of the night sky on September 12th 1865, the first day of harvest for a revered vintage that gives its name to the 1865 Club of connoisseurs at Baghera/wines.
De Bethune, an active member of the 1865 Club, has inserted small white gold pins into the dial to represent stars on the night of le vendange.
The winning bidder for the watch will be given a visit to the Manufacture De Bethune, followed by a lunch with Michael Ganne, CEO Baghera /wines and Pierre Jacques, CEO De Bethune, as well as a tasting of some excellent vintages.
