Cheek-to-cheek with Carrera in Red

Is it just me that can’t get the Chris de Burgh classic Lady in Red out of my head since receiving news of this new TAG Heuer Carrera?

Hopefully the affliction will soon pass.

With just a year to go until it celebrates its 60th birthday, the Carrera, first introduced by Heuer in 1963, is getting a fiery summer makeover with a new 600-piece Red Dial limited-edition.

A watch that its creator Jack Heuer describes as “undoubtedly my proudest creation”, the Carrera united two of Jack’s personal passions – watches and motor sport.

Named for the infamous Carrera Panamericana, considered by many top-class drivers to be the world’s most grueling race, its connections to the world of motorsport are long-lasting and unbreakable. Over the years it has been the timepiece of choice for drivers including Jackie Ickx, Clay Regazzoni and Mario Andretti.

By choosing red for the dial of the new model, TAG Heuer is not only highlighting the spirit of danger and courage that Jack Heuer was championing.

It is also following a brand tradition that has seen the hue used in other iconic racing models including the Silverstone, Monaco and Autavia.

The brushed-sunray finish to the deep wine shade gives a contemporary feel to this classic tri-compax chronograph. A rich contrast is achieved through the snailing of the three sub-dials – the minute counter at 3 o’clock, the running seconds at 6, and the hour counter at 9. The indexes and hands are coated with Super-LumiNova and the legends ‘Carrera’ and ‘Heuer’ in white sit at 12 o’clock.

Within the 39mm polished-steel case, which is water resistant to 100m. is a the self-winding Calibre Heuer 02, with 80 hours of power reserve. The rotor and chrono column wheel, with flashes of red, are visible through the exhibition caseback.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition is equipped with a black alligator strap and folding clasp and bears the inscriptions “ONE OF 600” and “Limited Edition” on the caseback.

The watch is available from today exclusively through TAG Heuer boutiques, select wholesale partner boutiques and via the brand’s e-commerce site.

It will retail for $6750.
