Breitling is phasing in three versions of its re-issued Ref. 765 AVI pilot’s watch, popularly known as the co-pilot, in steel, rose gold and platinum editions.

Watches will land in March for the steel version, priced at CHF 7,900, in May for a piece in rose gold costing CHF 21,000 and in June for the top end platinum piece selling for CHF 39,000.

The original Co-Pilot chronograph was launched in 1953 and used design codes from cockpit clocks of that era and had a less complicated and more easily read face than its Navitimer stablemate.

When Georges Kern took the reigns at Breitling two years ago, he said he would be trawling the archives for inspiration, and re-issues have proved their commercial value already, with the Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 launched last year becoming a bestseller for the brand.

He expects the 765 AVI to perform the same trick in 2020. “It was always clear to us that long-time Breitling fans would embrace these watches. But it’s also exciting to see how strongly they appeal to people who are new to our brand – they can take one look at a re-edition and see how much living history, innovation, and cool luxury we can pack into a single watch,” Mr Kern says.

Watch brands are wary of over-supply this year, so we are seeing more limited editions than usual.

The AVI Ref. 765 1953 Re-Edition is being produced in a limited series of 1953 numbered pieces in steel. There will be 253 made in rose gold and 153 in platinum.

The all use the Breitling Caliber 09 hand would movement in a 41.1mm case. They are worn on leather straps.
