80’s film star’s Rolex Daytona set to make its mark at auction

World Record breaking Paul Newman Daytona sold last year.

The ‘Paul Newman’ Rolex Daytona is expected to make up to $250k when it goes under the hammer this Thursday.

Named after its late movie star owner, the piece is considered by many to be one of the most recognizable watches in the world.

The chronograph will be the top lot at the Fortuna auction house ‘Important Watches’ sale this Thursday with an estimate of $150,000 – $250,000.

The circa 1968, 36mm stainless steel chronograph has a cream dial and includes applied square and luminous indexes, a black outer track and red calibrations.

The dial has the ‘Daytona’ name in red letters above the subdial at 6 o’clock, the stainless steel bezel has a 200-unit graduated tachometer and the watch is powered by the Valjoux 722 manual movement.

The ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona is one of 104 watches being offered by Fortuna on Thursday along with pieces from other brands, including Breguet, Patek Philippe and Chopard.

A previous Paul Newman watch, a model he wore every day for 15 years, sold for a world record  amount of $15.5m at the Phillips Auction in October 2017.
